Mysterious section “Research” on the Case (incident) form in CRM 2013

When working with a large customization project where the Case (incident) form was a centrepiece, we’ve found that – in an upgraded CRM 2013 solution – there was a mysterious section named “Research”. It wasn’t anything we put there, it just appeared.

It can’t be removed, because it’s content is “locked”. The content is not editable. It can’t be hidden and nothing happens if you double-click it in customization.

And we didn’t want it there. To be completely fair, it doesn’t seem do anything (we know of), it doesn’t show up on the form and it doesn’t take up any space. But, being rather picky about how things are done, we found it “disturbing” and “messy”. So, as we couldn’t remove it, we moved it to another tab and hid the complete tab.

Kids; don’t try this at home.

If you hide it (i.e. set the section to not visible, by code or customization), if you move it to another tab and hide the tab or if you move it to any other tab than the first one you will receive the following JavaScript error message:

Error initializing component with element id='CaseResearch_LinkControl_resolvedcasesgrid' and with type='Mscrm.GridControlLite': Object [object Object] has no method 'get_displayState'

Environment

We’ve only seen this problem in an environment running UR1 of Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2013 that was upgraded from 2011. When UR2 is official I’ll post an update.
